Jackson Maynard is about to be ordained as a Death Dealer, a warrior for the Kingdom of Cymmera, but first he must pass one more test. When he fails to acquire the human girl the prophet has chosen, he’s forced to stand trial for treason. Banished from his realm, he seeks out the girl from the vision, Ryleigh Donnovan, and together they embark on a journey to save his dying kingdom.
CHARACTER INTERVIEW
What are the 4 qualities of a good character?
One of the most important qualities of a good character is that they have flaws. If every character was perfect, there would be no room for them to grow, and the story would be boring.
Which brings me to the second quality. A good character must learn from their mistakes and grow throughout the story. They might (and should) make new mistakes, but they should learn from past mistakes.
Loyalty is another important quality. If characters are disloyal to other characters, they are not likeable. Of course, a lack of loyalty makes a great quality in villains.
Lastly, they need to have courage to do what needs to be done no matter how frightened they might be.
How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?
I feel unsettled and confused. I was sent by the prophet to acquire (a nice word for kill and transfer) a human girl for the Kingdom of Cymmera. Elijah never makes mistakes, but it seems this time he may have, because when I encounter Ryleigh, I’m unable to take her life. I’m not sure why, but I have to find out, because I’m apparently unable to kill her. And yet, if I don’t, I will be, at best, banished from my realm and, at worst, executed. So, I need to figure this out quickly. As for things I’d like to change, the punishment for treason (banishment or execution) tops the list.
What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?
The most important event of my life should have been the ceremony that would have taken place after I acquired Ryleigh, making me a Death Dealer and second in line for my father’s throne. Since I failed, I guess the most important event was meeting Ryleigh, though I haven’t figured out what role she’ll play in my life yet.
