Just then a young mother and her son moved to the checkout. Melinda couldn’t believe how well the bookstore was doing with Christmas in the air. She made small talk as she rang up the children’s books.

As they were walking to the exit, Melinda called out, “You forgot your scarf.”

The mother paused and glanced at her daughter before turning back. “It’s not ours.”

Huh? It wasn’t there earlier. She picked up the red knitted scarf. As her fingers touched the super soft material, she recognized it. This was the scarf she’d made for her father last Christmas. He must have forgotten it.

She rushed around the counter and headed for the door. She hurried outside. Unprepared for the icy sidewalk, her foot hit a patch and her body fell forward.

Her arms slashed through the icy cold air as she struggled to regain her balance. She was losing the battle. And then her arms landed against something sturdy and unmoving.

In the blink of an eye, she realized it wasn’t something but rather someone. When she tilted her chin upward, her gaze met a pair of striking blue eyes that reminded her of long lazy days on the beach while staring up at the clear blue sky. She knew that gaze. It was Liam. Embarrassment consumed her.

In her rush to straighten herself, she forgot about the ice. Her shoes once more slipped. Before she fell, Liam’s hands reached out to her once more. His hands spanned her waist.

“Hey. Take it easy.” His deep voice washed over her.

She stopped moving. “I’m sorry. I didn’t see you. I was trying to catch up with my father.”

Liam continued to hold onto her. “I didn’t see him. Was it something important?”

She shook her head. “I suppose not.” She held up the scarf. “He forgot this.”

“I think he’ll be okay without it.”

“I… I’ll drop it off this evening.”

She realized he was still holding onto her. The heat from his bare hands radiated through her white sweater. It made her heart pitter-patter.

The reaction surprised her. It wasn’t like they were anything other than friends—very good friends. However, they weren’t going to be anything more than that. They’d both helped each other through tough times that year and it had formed an unbreakable bond between them.
