This Halloween, the cats are hiding, and the monsters don’t wear costumes.

Young men from the Portland-Seattle area are going missing. It’s just another sad headline to Lynley Cannon—until she starts her new cat sitting job for an enigmatic neighbor Darla, that is.

An off-limits room, a suspicious phone message involving drugs, and the sudden appearance of a missing man’s cat peaks Lynley’s interest, but how far can she go before her cat-like curiosity turns deadly?

CHARACTER INTERVIEW with Lynley Cannon, sixty-something cat shelter volunteer and hero of the Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mysteries.

What are the 4 qualities of a good character?

Lynley: Since I am a character, I can only speak for myself. I consider myself a good character, and since I am also the main character in my series, I feel there is pressure to be that way. My character, a single hexagenerian cat person, has developed over the ten books, so I would have to say the number one quality for a good character is the ability to learn and grow. A character must also be multi-dimensional, not just the flat imitation of a human being. Heroes must have a little bad in them, and villains must have some good. Hero, villain, sidekick, or background, characters need to have something compelling about them, something a reader can relate to and something that will pique their interest. And cats. A good character should have at least one cat.

How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?

I am essentially happy in my life right now, but it hasn’t always been the case. As a hippie in my youth, then a wife and mother, there were many challenges, both physical, mental, and social. I finally hit my stride as a single woman and a grandmother. I now can do what I want, and since what I want most is usually good for me, I do well. Besides being a dedicated long-time cat shelter volunteer, I visit assisted living residents and hospice patients with my therapy cat Tinkerbelle. A good friend is a humane investigator, and on occasion I help him with a case. My mother is still very much alive, and we get along well. My granddaughter is the light of my life, along with my substantial number of cats.

If I could change one thing, aside from the iffy state of the world, it would be to reconcile with my daughter. My relationship with Lisa has been rocky since she grew into adulthood. I feel most of the fault is hers, with her constant outspoken criticism of me and my cat-centric lifestyle. Still, just maybe there is something I can do, some little change I can make that would set things right. That’s what I wish for. That, and for all homeless cats to be adopted into loving forever homes.

What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?

This may sound odd, but I think my most lifechanging event was when I got involved in the theft of the Cats’ Eyes diamonds many years ago. Through no fault of my own, I found myself being pursued by thugs, accused of murder, and captured by the person who actually did the killings. Being afraid for my life was something I’d never experienced before, and it taught me the uncertainty of life. All the more reason to live well, be happy, help others, and take care of oneself. I also learned I have a talent for both getting into trouble and solving crimes.
