Diving into My Whimsical Writing Process with Elsie Woods

Hello, dear readers! Ever find yourself deep in a story and wonder, “Where on earth does the writer get these ideas?”

Well, that’s what today’s little chat is all about. Hold onto your hats (or coffee cups), as I unveil my slightly chaotic, always colorful writing process.

While the world moves towards digital everything, I’m a sucker for the tactile joy of index cards teamed with multicolored erasable pens. Every color means something different – but I don’t have hard and fast rules. For one book, red might be the romantic elements, while in another red is for the enemy trying to thwart the meant-to-be-in-love couple from getting together.

Every idea gets its own card, not matter how small the detail. “Brown hair”, “college graduate”, “likes dill pickles” might be the beginnings of my main character, while the setting gets a stack of cards including “warm climate”, “bustling city”, “dog park down the street for their meet cute”. And for the plot? It might be “He’s a jerk to her at work, makes fun of her hair”, or “her mother intrudes during their first kiss”… I can’t help it – I love interrupted kisses!

Real-life situations, especially from my own collection of love life blunders, often take center stage in my stories. Misinterpreted texts, awkward first date silences, shoes betraying me right when I try to strut – they all find a way to weave into my narratives. Why invent comedy when life hands it over on a silver platter?

Then comes the fun part of creating a puzzle. I piece them together, laying out each card, painting a vivid picture of my next story. I rework the cards, building out one chapter per card, weaving the other elements into it. These chapter cards will become my lifeblood in the next phase…

With my brainstormed ideas in tow, I settle down with my trusty Alphasmart word processor and my first plot card. Whether it’s the serenity of nature, the heartbeat of a city, or the hum of a cafe, I can write just about anywhere (but I also keep a pair of earplugs with me, just in case). The beauty of being about to touch-type is that I can observe the world around me as I get the words down. I always find this very inspiring, especially when it’s people.

People-watching is a favorite pastime, often influencing my stories. For instance, once at a cafe, I witnessed a young woman stealthily sneaking fries from her date’s plate every time he looked away. That cheeky scene made it into a chapter!

Another time, I observed a gentleman, seemingly engrossed in a book. Every few minutes, he’d laugh out loud, only to quickly stifle it with feigned coughs. I imagined him being so engrossed in a story that he missed his future paramour going out of her way to be cute in front of him.

So there you go, a sneak peek into my whimsical world of storytelling. It’s a mix of self-inflicted comic situations, dedicated eavesdropping, and color-coded chaos. And truly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now I hope you’ll enjoy When Cupid Falls First, which is in the Realm of Midnight collection – maybe you can even figure out some of the things I put on my index cards during Josie and Caleb’s kissing scenes! Happy reading! 📖
