Book Description:

Prudence Aldrich is a sex addict. Five weeks ago, she checked into the Serenity Hills rehab center to prevent that addiction from ruining every important relationship in her life. Now Prue must face the trail of destruction she left behind, including mending the broken bond with her teenage son, finalizing the divorce from her husband, Nick, and using a newly learned set of skills to ward off her insatiable cravings for male attention-a compulsion that puts her friendship with lifelong pal Lily to the test.

Adding ever further complications to the hurdles in her path is the arrival into town of Alistair Prescott, her in-rehab romantic obsession, and the one person in the world most capable of throwing Prue off her recovery. Meanwhile, Serenity Hills counselor Mike Sullivan is undergoing a crisis of his own-one that will drive him to the rediscovery of a lifelong passion . . . and causing him to cross paths again with Prue, his former patient.

A Dress the Color of the Moon tracks the rocky and sometimes disastrous path to recovery-a recovery that will require Prudence and her friends to face down the demons of their pasts while learning to accept the fearful uncertainty that comes with living life on your own two feet.

GUEST POST

A Dream of Writing

I’m not a writer who has dreamed about this career my whole life. Instead, a story brewed in my head for years—characters, storylines, landscapes and facial expressions imprinted in my brain—jotted on scraps of paper, dry cleaning receipts, the palm of my hand. Some of the storyline for the DRESS series emerged while writing a screenplay in college which gained me acceptance into an arts program in New York City.

I have always loved writing, telling a story, even embellishing things to make the story sound better. But the dream was not there until my marriage crumbled and I used the written word to feel better. My desire to have my voice heard overcame my fear of failure. The tough part was believing in myself and not feeling like a phony. I hadn’t graduated with a Masters in creative writing from a top school. I didn’t have that dark, gloomy, artsy vibe I had seen in the movies. All I had was a willingness to try and the strength to face my fear of failing. Since embarking on this writing journey, I have found fellow writers to be both kind and supportive. There was also a harsh realization that being a good or even great writer may not be enough. The author must diligently market their work and ask for help.

There are hard lessons too. Whenever someone is chasing a dream, there is an opportunity to be taken advantage of because dreamers will do anything to make their dreams become a reality. It’s important to find a team you can trust. Hang with friends who still smile after you’ve talked about how you’re writing a book for the hundredth time. Step away from your work to return with fresh eyes—meet a friend for coffee, walk the dog, water the garden, then edit, edit, edit. My skin has thickened. I handle rejection with grace because even criticism can help me improve. The publishing business is tough, old-fashioned and hard to break into, but writing has made me stronger.

For me to write, the sink has clean of dishes, the cushions fluffed just so, the laundry rolling along, the Himalayan salt lamp lit, the diffuser fired up, a candle burning—yes, I’m a freak, but this helps calm my mind so I can create. Try to figure out what gets your creative energy flowing and roll with it.
