GUEST POST
My Ideal Library
I had the opportunity to visit Skywalker Ranch several years ago. The main 50,000 square foot house has this amazing research library. The key feature of the room is a recessed ceiling with a beautiful stained-glass dome and an ornate wood spiral staircase leading to many of the 27,000 books. A few tables with lamps and cozy chairs are set up so you can discuss the books. The room itself actually feels smaller than what it looks like in photographs which makes the room even cozier. This library has always inspired me to one day create one of my own.
If I could do anything to create this space, I would want this library to be smartly hidden in the main house with a secret entrance. In my mind’s eye I see floor to ceiling books. A big picture window to let the natural light in with heavy, velvet curtains that can be pulled at any time. Upon entrance, I want guests to smell a fresh cedar scent with hint of lavender. I wouldn’t want the library to be too large. However, it’s important that the room include high ceilings so that a ladder would be necessary. There must be a desk with a few chairs in the main area in case the writing bug hits at any moment. Of course, it is super important to me to have a concealed room embedded in the library where one of the shelves open and reveal the coziest room in the house. This hidden nook will have amber lighting, the most comfortable leather chair in the world and a circular window looking out to a beautiful vista.
I decided to write one of my ideal libraries in my second novel, Slingshot from The Kingston Chronicles. I had so much fun looking at pictures on how people designed their libraries. The curious part for me would be how to organize the books. Right now, our shelves are filled with books that my husband, my daughter and I have read. It’s a mixture of things that we enjoy so I’d have to come up with interesting sections to feature the books. Though it would take considerable thought, no matter how we organized the titles, I would be sure that the room was as inviting as possible. The other consideration I would like to make is a fun system to check out the books including a signature and a date inside of the copy to see how many people had read it like a diary of sorts. All I know is that I would like to create a library that would inspire and bring tremendous comfort while reading the many thoughts and stories inside of that beautiful room.
