Who was that guy?
Emma walked quickly toward the beach. She couldn’t get the man’s image out of her mind. He’d been tall, just over six feet. His light-brown hair had been short and spikey on top, as though he took extra time to style it. His light-blue polo shirt was pressed and paired with khaki shorts.
He had to be a tourist because she didn’t know any locals that dressed this nice unless it was a special occasion. Bluestar was a pretty relaxed place. And even though he seemed somewhat familiar, she was certain she wouldn’t forget such a handsome face.
The thought of him being a tourist helped her relax. Soon he’d be gone, and their paths would never cross again. He certainly hadn’t liked her. And even worse, he didn’t even know her to form such negative opinion.
What was it with her? She seemed to attract man trouble, of one type or another, no matter where she went.
The crowd of people grew thicker the closer she got to the beach. The last thing she wanted was for anyone else to recognize her like that girl had done at the café. For the moment, she wanted to be no one special.
Emma veered away from the beach. She’d go for a walk along the shore later when there weren’t so many people. This evening she could come back. Maybe she’d even indulge herself in a Whippy Dip’s ice cream cone. The thought of ice cream with chocolate sprinkles definitely appealed to her.
But she needed something to do now to keep her from thinking of that photo. So, she headed toward The Elegant Bakery, owned by her sister. Hannah was always working, so Emma had no doubt she’d be at the bakery.
When Emma turned onto Main Street, she immediately spotted a line of people on the sidewalk in front of the bakery. Wow! Though, she shouldn’t be surprised. She’d grown up eating her sister’s delicious cupcakes and cookies. As kids, they’d challenged each other in the kitchen and then had their family do a blind taste test. Hannah won most of the time but not every time.
And that was okay with Emma. She had other interests, the number one being singing. Her father had been her biggest fan. Her mother was a close second.
When she was growing up, her father always asked her to sing him a song. Sometimes it was embarrassing, but he gave her the confidence to try out for the Songbird competition. Sadly, he never got to see her win the television competition.
Not wanting to get caught up in the sad memories, she pushed them to the back of her mind as she sidestepped the line in front of the bakery and made her way to the back door. There were definite advantages to being the owner’s sister.
