EXCERPT

Heather patted the horse’s face and held out another, smaller, carrot. Matt was doing the same with Bo. Both horses nickered softly, liking the attention and the treat. Heather’s arm brushed Matt’s, but she stayed put and so did he.

In the background, the music and mixed sounds of conversation and laughter seemed so far away. She glanced up at him. “It’s almost strange how removed it feels here, like all that music and dancing is a world of its own.”

“That’s so,” Matt said softly, “and it’s filled with beautiful things.” His fingertips touched her cheek and lightly traveled down to rest on the curve of her jaw.

She could have stepped back, but instead she closed her eyes, put her hand on his arm, and welcomed what was coming. His lips brushed hers. She tightened her grip on his arm and he kissed her again, a firm, hungry kiss. She wanted another and another. Finally, she moved back and reluctantly lowered her arms.

“Aren’t you glad my horses like a late-night treat?” Matt whispered in her ear. When he wrapped his arms around her, she rested her head on his chest. But he lifted her chin and kissed her again and ran his fingers through her hair.

Confused, breathless, and tongue-tied when they broke the kiss, Heather pivoted to Pebbles and fed her the last carrot. “I didn’t forget about your treat, you sweet thing.” No, but she had forgotten most everything else.
